James Evans - CPT Champion 2011
James Evans became the 2011 Cornwall Poker Tour (CPT) Championship winner on Friday 20th December after finishing top of the field following the 2-day Championship tournament. After a year long season 48-players descended on the Edgcliff Club on Tuesday the 13th December to play-off for the Championship. By the end of the night the field had been reduced to the final 9 players including the 2010 CPT Championship winner Martin Haywood who was looking to become the first ever two time CPT Champion. 2011 and 2010 CPT League Champions Paul Slaney and Jonny Davidson also made up the final table line up.
The final 9 gathered on Friday 20th December at the Edgcliff to recommence Day 2 of the Championship and play down until only one player remained. Steve hallett was the first casualty going in 9th after his short stack failed to recover from an outdraw leaving him praying on an outcome of a flip versus Jonny Davidson which he lost. 2011 League Champion Paul Slaney was the next to go as he suffered a bad beat against Alex tarnock who was proving to be the livliest player at the table at the time. Luke Holmes dream's of running as deep as he had in the 2009 tournament came to a premature end as he was our next casualty as he crashed in 7th place. While all of this was going on chip leader James Evans had slowly been building his stack as he retained a commanding lead over the rest of the players. Tom Berry and Alex Tarnock had also made significant improvements to their stacks. Probably the most significant hand of the tournament occurred when James Evans check reraised Alex all in on the flop. After tanking for a long time Alex made the call for a pot worth almost 3 million chips with just a pair of Jacks only to find it was good as james had pushed with nothing. Nothing somehow managed to get there as James spiked a king on the turn and just to rub it in a King on the river to eliminate Alex in 6th place and now sit on over two thirds of the chips in play. The 2010 champion Martin haywood valiant efforts at becoming the first two time champion were extinguished as he crashed in 5th place. Jonny Davidson was the next to go as his chip stack had dwindled massively. Lisa Clements was the next out facing the same fate as Jonny as she was massively outchipped by both James and Tom Berry. The heads up confrontation saw james with 3.5 million versus the one million of Tom Berry announce that he would be all in every hand. It was the winning tactic as the third hand in Tom decided to gamble and call with Q7 hearts only for the blindman to flip Kings which held for him to take down the 2011 Championship event.
The 2012 season starts once more at the Edgcliff on Tuesday 11th January.
